While anyone is welcome to attend services with the Marquette Unitarian Universalist Congregation, becoming a member of the congregation affirms support for the principles and goals of this spiritual community. Members of the congregation are given a voice (in the form of voting rights) to be used in guiding the congregation.

There are a couple of prerequisites for membership:

  • You must be 16 years of age or older.
  • You must concur with Unitarian Universalist principles:

We subscribe to the Unitarian Universalist Association’s covenant to affirm
and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; justice, equity,
and compassion in human relations; acceptance of one another and
encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregation; a free and
responsible search for truth and meaning; the right of conscience and
democratic process within our congregation and in society at large; the goal
of a world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all; and respect for
the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

We prefer people to attend a number of services in order to determine whether we are a “good fit” for their religious journey. Further, it is encouraged to have a personal meeting, prior to becoming a member of the congregation, with a member of the Board of Trustees to:

  • review the basics of membership;
  • answer questions about the congregation;
  • discuss what is sought in a spiritual community.

If you need a few more reasons to join a Unitarian Universalist Congregation, we find this list from the Countryside Church of Palatine, Illinois to be helpful.

Once the prerequisites have been met, the act of becoming a member is rather straightforward:

  1. You sign the membership roll with a member of the Board of Trustees as a witness.
  2. You make a written pledge of financial support with the Treasurer.
  3. You make a payment in any amount toward that pledge.
