Walking With Adams’ Five Smooth Stones
Lay Minister, Paul Mitchell
Rev. James Luther Adams was a leading Unitarian Universalist Theologian in the mid 20th century. Invoking the 1 Samuel account of the David and Goliath story, he titled his succinct definition of religious liberalism, Five Smooth Stones of Religious Liberalism. We’ll review Adams’ thought and shares stories of how one congregation put them to work. Paul Mitchell is currently the Lay Minister with the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Houghton.
Paul Mitchell is the current Lay Minister at the Keweenaw UU Fellowship. His other UU lay staff positions include; in 2014 he was a founding member and Co-Executive Director of Arizona’s State Advocacy Network, the UU Justice Arizona network (UUJAZ). Prior to his statewide work he was the Social Justice Ministry Facilitator for the Granite Peak UU Congregation in Prescott, AZ. He also served as the Executive Director for the Coalition for Compassion and Justice a non-profit agency now focused on generating sustainable housing opportunities with folks experiencing chronic homelessness. Paul grew up spending summers at Lake Michigamme and his family’s roots go back several generations in the UP. He returned to live in Houghton just about a year ago.
