Social Action in the MUUC Community

Social Action Committee Position Paper
At its August 2009 meeting, the Social Action Committee adopted the following:
Purpose:
To put our UU faith and its Seven Principles into action. To show our children, the community and the wider world how we try to live our faith.
Goals:
To bring to the Marquette UU Congregation, a balance of social justice issues concerning local, regional, state, national and international levels.
To provide the congregation with information, education, resources, and ideas for action regarding social justice topics.
To act as a link regarding social justice issues and action between the congregation and the Unitarian Universalist Association (including Central Midwest District) and Michigan UU Social Justice Network.
Activities:
The five types of justice work to include: service, education, advocacy and witness.
Provide article on social justice issues for the MUUC Chronicle and in other appropriate ways.
Provide Sunday morning service and Adult Forum speakers on SAC topics.
Share with wider community MUUC’s commitment and actions in area of justice and action via direct contact with the media and community organizations where appropriate (Earthkeepers, Citizens for Peace & Justice, National Wildlife Federation, other churches, NMU groups, Save the Wild UP, Marquette Interfaith Forum, etc.)
Collaboration with statewide group, Michigan UU Social Justice Network.
Procedures:
Provide leadership and/or support to congregation -- Religious Education, Adult Forum, Music -- around SAC issues.
Individuals who have social or justice issue should attend a SAC meeting with specifics and commitment to provide a leadership role. The SAC may help individuals develop idea, recruit others, look for tie ins to other groups within the congregation and outside community.
Current Areas of Congregational Action:
Peace making
Palestinian justice and human rights
Environmental concerns e.g. Metalic Sulfide Issue, climate change
Educational support for Haitian children
Support of children of incarcerated parents
Fund raising for Heifer project by children
Room at the Inn, shelter for area homeless, in partnership with other faith communities

Redmen/Redette logo issue
Healthcare for the under served
Dental Assistance for the under served
